FALL/WINTER 2017-2018

 “Sachem Lax Skills

In order to accomplish our goal of developing home-grown high school caliber lacrosse talent, Winchester Lacrosse is pleased to announce our Fall/Winter campaign - "Sachems Lax Skills" Program.

The Fall/Winter Program will consist of 1 skills practice per week during the week, as well as 1 drop-in “speed lacrosse” hour (indoor and outdoor) on Sundays.

We do not want those lax sticks to see your attic.  We want our boys to be playing lax at least once a week during the so-called “off season”.

Program details:

  • Program will start the week of October 9th, 2017.
  • Program will end the week of March 1st, with no practices during Thanksgiving week, Christmas vacation and during February break.
  • Skills practices will be split up by Grade:
    • 1st -2th Grade (Wendesdays at 4:00-5:15PM)
    • 3rd – 5th Grade (Wednesdays at 4:00-5:15PM)
    • 6th – 8th Grade (Friday at 4:00-5:15PM)
  • Practices times will be scheduled to allow for a 1-hour high paced skills practice.  This means we will schedule 75 minute practices to account for kids suiting up.
  • All Fall/Winter skills practice will be coached by, or under the direction of, one of the WYL head coaches.  We will ask some friends-of-the-program (parents) to assist with the younger grades (especially with 1-2nd Grade).
  • Exact times and location for the outdoor portion of the session (at least until Thanksgiving) will be announced shortly after Labor Day.  We will be on Ginn Field or VO.
  • Once we need to relocate indoors, the Program will arrange for indoor turf space.  Depending on the age group, the indoor skills practices will likely be at Boyles Gym (younger kids) or at a larger indoor facility (ex., club lacrosse facility in Beford or Wilmington, MA).  We will not go indoors until it is both too cold and too dark.
  • Weekend speed lacrosse sessions will be outdoors, then in a Winchester Public School gym (based on cold/darkness).

The House League.  The WYL House League is for Kindergarten – 2nd Grade.  This is our biggest group of lacrosse players each Spring.  We strive to make the House League FUN.  The goal is to have fun, start to like the game of lacrosse, and get better.

  • Weather permitting, the season begins the week of April 2nd.
  • House League players are divided into three, grade-based divisions: The Kindergarten Division, the 1st Grade Division & the 2nd Grade Division.
  • Within each grade, teams (that are as evenly weighted as possible) are established for “Game Day” (which will be Sundays).  Games will be played on the turf at the Middle School.
  • Teams are no longer named after MLL teams – we are all the WINCHESTER SACHEMS.
  • Grades practice together as an entire grade (so-called “gang practices”), with common instruction across the Grade from parent coaches. Practices will be for 1-hour during the school week (Mon-Fri; 5 or 6 o’clock) on either Ginn Field or VO Field.  There is an additional, but optional, skills practice (K-2) held on Saturdays at VO Field.
  • During practices, players may be periodically separated based on skill level to allow for newer players to develop basic skills, while allowing more experienced players to advance their skill and game skills.
  • Exact times for practices and games will be established during the Winter (but as soon as possible).

3rd & 4th Grades - Town Pride League, Small Ball Division

  • Our 3rd and 4th Grade groups participate in the Town Pride League.
  • Weather permitting, the season begins the week of April 2nd. Practice may start earlier if weather permits.
  • Games are played on a so-called “small ball” (sideline to sideline), playing 6 on 6 with each team having a goalie (so 7 on 7).
  • Players are divided into even level-loaded teams.  TPL rules requires that game-day teams are evenly constructed.  In order to level out teams, there may be changes during the season.
  • Two practices per week.  Players will all practice together, rotating through separate coaching stations.
  • During practices, players’ skill level will be informally established so that we can (a) comply with the TPL rules and create even teams, and (b) periodically group the boys by skill level to allow beginners to hone basic skills, and allow more experienced players to advance.
  • TPL games on Sundays (make up games may be on Saturdays).

5th, 6th, 7th, 8th Grade - Town Pride League, Full Field Division

  • Weather permitting, the season begins the week of April 2nd. Practice may start earlier if weather permits.
  • Participate in the Town Pride League (http://tpllax.com/).
  • Players are divided into two teams (A and B Team).  One team will play in the TPL – “A Division” and one team will play in the TPL – “B Division”.
  • Players are placed on either the A Team or the B Team based on the following:
    • Coaches evaluations, 3rd party evaluations, & demonstrated commitment to the sport of lacrosse.
    • Tryouts will be scheduled in late February.  There will be two tryouts to accommodate busy schedules.
    • Teams established pursuant to the tryouts are subject to change throughout the season.
  • There will be 3 evening practices each week.
  • TPL games are held on Sundays.  But makeup games and added games may be played on Saturdays or weeknights.
  • Possibility of added games on other days.
  • Teams will participate in the TPL Tournament, as well as consider addition tournaments based on availability. ‚Äč
